My buddy called my sleeping bag setup 'a good way to freeze' and he wasn't wrong

We were camping near Lake Tahoe last fall and I just threw my old bag on top of my pad like always. He saw it and said, 'Dude, you're losing all your heat to the ground, the pad goes under the bag.' I switched it that night and it felt like I gained 10 degrees of warmth, no joke. Has anyone else made a basic mistake like that for years without knowing?

Honestly, your "gained 10 degrees" thing makes me wonder how many other simple gear tweaks we're all missing.

Doubt it makes that big a difference honestly.

Oh man, it really does though. That extra warmth from a small change is huge when you're out for hours. It's the difference between being comfortable and having to cut a trip short. We ignore the little stuff until one tweak makes everything click.
