My buddy swore by a 20-degree sleeping bag for summer in the Smokies, and I froze.

He said it was 'all you need' for July, but the temps dropped into the 40s at night and I was miserably cold for three nights straight. What's a good summer bag for those mountain trips where the weather can flip fast?

Honestly your buddy gave you some bad advice there. I've done a lot of summer nights in the Smokies and a 20 degree bag is asking for trouble. Tbh you need at least a 10 degree bag for real safety, maybe even a 0 degree if you sleep cold. Those mountain valleys can trap cold air and make it feel way worse than the forecast says. I'd never go up there without a solid bag and a good sleeping pad too.
