My inflatable sleeping pad popped at 2am and I learned a new swear word

Last month at Big Basin, I set up camp and inflated my pad like always. At 2am I rolled over and felt the ground through the fabric, then heard a slow hiss that sounded like a dying balloon. Turns out a tiny rock had worn through the seam after just 3 uses. I spent the rest of the night on pine cones and a sweatshirt, and now I always carry a patch kit and a foam pad as backup. Has anyone else had a pad fail on the first trip, or did I just get a lemon?

Carried a beat-up foam pad as a backup on a trip last year and ended up using it more than my inflatable one. Turns out the cheap closed-cell foam never fails and keeps you off the rocks just fine. Now I just take the foam pad everywhere and leave the fancy one at home.
