My tent choice came down to a 2-person or a 4-person for solo trips

I was getting a new tent for mostly solo backpacking in the Rockies and had to pick. The 2-person was lighter at 4 pounds, but the 4-person gave way more space for gear. I went with the bigger one for the extra room, and it was a game changer during a 3-day rainstorm last fall. Has anyone else picked a bigger tent for solo trips, or do you stick with the lighter option?

Totally get what val_williams means about trading one kind of weight for another. That mental relief is huge. I used to be a total weight weenie, but getting caught in bad weather changes you. The few extra pounds on my back meant I could actually sit up to change clothes and keep my pack inside. That space turned a miserable wait into just being bored, which is a big upgrade. It's not about luxury, it's about making your shelter actually work for you when things go wrong.

Makes me think about how we all weigh space against weight in different parts of life. I bought a smaller car for better gas mileage, but I miss being able to just throw my bike in the back without taking the wheel off. Sometimes the lighter, more efficient choice means giving up a little freedom. Your tent story is a perfect example of choosing comfort when you know you'll be stuck inside it for days.

Actually I think you've got it backwards in my case. That heavy tent IS the freedom choice for bad weather. Being stuck in a tiny coffin for three days of rain feels like a prison. The extra weight buys you the space to move, play cards, dry gear. It's trading physical weight for mental weight off your shoulders. Efficiency isn't always about the lightest gear.
