Overheard a guy at REI say his tent poles snapped after 3 nights in Moab

Was waiting in line at the REI in Salt Lake last weekend and this dude in front of me was returning a tent. He told the clerk his brand new poles snapped on the third night of a trip near Moab. Said he wasn't even in crazy wind or anything. Just set it up normal and one of the aluminum sections split right at the joint. Made me wonder if some of these lightweight poles are getting too thin for actual use. Anyone have a brand that's held up on rocky ground like that?

Honestly, chances are that guy just got a bad pole or messed up the setup. People set tents up wrong all the time and then blame the gear. If aluminum poles were really that fragile, they wouldn't be the standard for almost every serious backpacking tent on the market.

Same exact thing happened to my buddy last fall.
