Rant: I used to think a 2-person tent was fine for solo trips, but after a miserable rainy night in the Smokies last October, I realized the extra space for my pack is non-negotiable.
What specific gear or setup change did you make after a bad trip that you'll never go back on?

Non-negotiable" space? I just put my pack in a trash bag outside the tent.

Last summer I saw a guy at Mount Rainier just leave his whole pack under a picnic table overnight. Nothing ate it and it didn't rain. Jasonf17 has a point with the trash bag trick. The whole "non-negotiable" rule feels like something invented by people who sell fancy gear. If a trash bag works for your trip, that's a solid plan. I've never had a problem keeping my stuff outside the tent in a simple bag.

Tried the trash bag move last year in Olympic National Park, worked fine even with some light drizzle lol.
