Remember when I thought a cheap tarp was fine for rain cover? Yeah that changed fast after a trip to Yosemite last spring.

seanjackson asking "was it really that bad or just a little wet" is exactly what someone who's never had a tarp fail says. The puddle forming right over the sleeping bag part is the nightmare scenario. You go to sleep thinking you're fine and wake up in a cold, wet mess. A ripping tarp is just insult to injury honestly. Cheap tarps don't even try to shed water, they just sit there and collect it. Learned that lesson myself once and never made that mistake again.

The first night in Yosemite I woke up at 3am with a puddle forming right over my sleeping bag because the cheap tarp just pooled water instead of shedding it. Honestly @seanjackson it was way worse than just a little wet, my whole bag got soaked and I had to sleep in the car for the next two nights. That cheap tarp ripped the second night from a light wind too, not even a storm. Ngl I learned my lesson the hard way, never skimp on rain protection out there.
