Remember when tent poles were just a bundle of fiberglass sticks?
Had a pole snap on me in a storm near Sedona, and I had to use a roll of duct tape and a pine branch to get through the night. Anyone ever have to do a real field repair like that, or is everything just replaceable now?

Duct tape is a permanent part of my kit now. Always pack a few heavy-duty zip ties too, they've saved a rainfly more than once.

Honestly I've found that stuff just adds weight and never gets used... my pack is way lighter without it.

Yeah I'm with you, I used to pack all that extra gear and it just sat there. Last trip I cut out like three pounds of stuff I never touched. Felt so much better on the trail.
