Remember when we all thought you needed a separate pot just for boiling water?

After a rainy week in the Adirondacks where everything was damp, I started boiling my morning coffee water right in my old steel mug over the fire, and it cut my pack weight by over a pound and saved a ton of space.

Totally get that. I mean, I boil water in my old tin cup all the time now. Makes you wonder why we carry so much extra stuff, idk.

Hold up, boiling water in a tin cup is a one-way ticket to burnt fingers and a cold drink. Specialized gear exists for a reason. A proper insulated pot boils faster, stays hot, and won't spill scalding water all over your camp. That extra stuff, like a light stove and a real pot, turns a shaky chore into a quick, safe task so you can actually enjoy being outside.

Yeah, the "shaky chore" part really hits. I've been there, trying to balance a tin cup on a rock while the wind blows. It feels like a fight you don't need. I see where @jenny_hall is coming from with using what you have, but after spilling hot water on my boot once, I gave in. My little aluminum pot and a basic stove fit in my palm and just work. It's not about fancy gear, it's about not starting my day stressed over a simple cup of coffee.
