Saw a guy at the campsite with a $15 tarp setup that outlasted my $200 tent in that storm last weekend

He was using some basic poly tarp and paracord ridge line while I was fighting with my tent poles at 2 AM, so now I'm wondering if I've been overcomplicating my whole shelter game for years, has anyone else tried going super minimalist with just a tarp?

Read somewhere that the whole tarp vs tent debate really comes down to where you set up, not just what you bring. I remember a bushcraft guy on YouTube talking about how a tarp is only as good as your site selection and knot tying skills. Dude probably knew exactly where to pitch it to catch the wind right. My buddy tried the super minimalist route last spring and ended up soaked because he didn't account for ground water running under him. It's not just about the gear being expensive or cheap, it's about knowing what the hell you're doing with it

Did your buddy blame the tarp or just admit he picked a crappy spot? @felix_black is right, you can have the best tarp in the world but if you don't read the ground and the wind right, you're still gonna get wet.

Yeah @felix_black hit it... I learned that lesson the hard way in a rainstorm last year too.
