Shoutout to the REI garage sale bin where I found a $200 tent for $30, but is that gear actually tested or just returned?
I went to the REI flagship store in Seattle last month and dug through their garage sale bin for about 40 minutes. I pulled out a Big Agnes Copper Spur tent marked down to $30 because someone had returned it with a small tear. I patched it with tape and took it out that weekend to test it in the rain. Here is my problem: half the stuff in those bins is returned because it failed, not because the person changed their mind. So the question is whether a garage sale item counts as a real review or just a gamble. I have seen people rave about their $40 finds and others say the gear fell apart on the first trip. Is it fair to review gear you got at a huge discount when you know it was already returned by someone else? I want to hear from folks who have taken that risk, did it work out or did you just get burned like I almost did?
