Talking with a park ranger about my fire starter changed my whole packing list
I was at a campground in Shenandoah last weekend and this ranger walked by while I was struggling with wet wood. He said, "Youre carrying all the wrong stuff for this climate." He showed me how he packs a small tin of petroleum jelly soaked cotton balls instead of my fancy store bought fire starters. Cost me like $2 to make at home and it lit in under a minute during drizzle. That conversation made me rethink every piece of gear I bring. Has anyone else had a pro or guide completely flip how you pack for a trip?
