The 2-person tent I swore by let me down in the Smokies last month

I spent 12 years defending a certain lightweight shelter because it passed every backyard test. Then a steady rain in the Smokies last month found three seam leaks and pooled right under my sleeping pad. What convinced me to switch was watching a scout master beside me use a cheap $15 footprint and a tarp ridge line, no drama at all. It made me realize I was overvaluing pack weight while ignoring the actual weatherproofing math. Anybody else trust a tent for over a decade before one soggy night changed their mind?

Man that hits hard. Same thing happened to me with an old dome tent I had for years, dry as a bone every trip until one night in the Great Smokies, a steady drizzle found this weird leak along the underside of the rainfly. Water wicked right up the bathtub floor and soaked my bag. Felt like a betrayal, honestly. Watching the guy next to me with his tarp and footprint setup, totally chill while I'm squeegeeing out my tent at 2am, that was the real wake-up call. I get the whole ounce-counting thing, but a dry sleep on wet ground means way more than saving a pound on my back.
