Unpopular opinion: my $12 headlamp beat my $70 one on a 3 day trip last month
I bought a cheap headlamp at a gas station near Lake George last month because I left my good one on the kitchen counter, and I figured it would die on me by the first night. The cheap one ran all three nights on the same batteries, and the beam was plenty bright for cooking and reading in the tent. My $70 one back home has a fancy rechargeable battery and five modes, but the switch is mushy and I always bump it on inside my pack so it's dead when I need it. I've been carrying that thing for two years and I finally admitted it's worse for me than a twelve dollar piece of plastic. The cheap one just has one button and two brightness levels, and that's all I actually use anyway. I'm not saying cheap gear always wins, but I spent real money on features I never touch. Has anyone else bought a pricier light and gone back to a simple one, or am I just bad at picking headlamps?
