I finally stopped chasing every VC in Toronto after a founder at a Mississauga meetup set me straight
I was dead set on raising a seed round for my payments startup, pitching anywhere I could in Toronto, probably talked to 14 funds in 5 months. Then a founder named Priya at a Mississauga fintech meetup asked why I was giving away 20% to sit on someone else's timeline instead of just getting to revenue first. She said her own company grew faster once they stopped pitching and started charging. So I pulled all my decks and spent the next 3 months just talking to actual merchants, and we hit $11k MRR on our own. Curious if other Canadian founders here went the bootstrapped route first too, or did you raise early?
Reminds me of a buddy who spent a whole summer driving to pitch events instead of just calling shops that needed his software. He ended up with way more traction once he stopped dressing up for investors and started knocking on doors.
