I used to track all my business expenses in a notebook from the dollar store

For my small fintech app, I wrote down every coffee and server cost by hand for two years. Then I saw a talk by the founder of a Toronto startup called BenchApp at a meetup in Vancouver. He said, 'If you're not automating your books, you're building on sand.' I switched to their software that week and it cut my admin time in half. Has anyone else found a Canadian fintech tool that just made a daily task vanish?

My old expense system was a shoebox and a prayer. Felt like a real genius when I upgraded to a spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets just make it easier to lie to yourself.

Remember my buddy who tracked his side business in a spreadsheet? He had this beautiful sheet showing he was making money. But he never put in the cost of his own time, or the gas to drive around. He believed the sheet so much he almost rented a storefront. That's what you mean, right @tara_patel? The numbers look so clean and official you forget what you left out. It's like the spreadsheet gives you permission to ignore the messy stuff. He was basically just moving his own money around and calling it profit.
