Walked past the old bank on Yonge St in Toronto and saw a fintech sign where the teller line used to be
I was killing time in Toronto last Friday waiting for a friend near Yonge and Bloor, and I stopped outside this old brick bank building. The big vault door is still there in the window but now it's a startup office with a sign about payroll for freelancers. It got me thinking about how many Canadian fintechs are moving into old bank branches instead of building new spaces. Has anyone here worked at a startup that took over a bank branch, and did the weird layout cause problems?
My cousin worked at a payroll startup on Queen West back in 2019 and their office was an old Toronto Dominion branch. The teller counter was still there, this long marble thing, and they used it as a lunch bar. Problem was the vault. They turned it into a meeting room but the door weighed like 20 tons so they just left it open all the time. Felt weird having standups in a room built to keep cash safe. Old banks have those high ceilings too so sound bounced everywhere, you could hear every phone call.
