A retired engineer at the hardware store gave me career advice I still use

Last fall at an Ace Hardware in Boise, an older guy named Frank helped me find a specific bolt. We got to talking about work, and he said most people rush into decisions because they want to feel busy. He told me to always wait 24 hours before saying yes to a job offer or a big project request. It sounds simple, but I have used that rule three times in the last year and it saved me from two bad situations. Has anyone else gotten solid career advice from a random stranger like that?

Frank's 24 hour rule is genius honestly. My uncle gave me something similar years ago when I was job hunting in my early 20s. He said if you feel pressured to say yes right away, that's a red flag. I sat on one offer for a day and realized the pay was way too low for the hours they wanted. Another time a contractor tried to rush me into signing a big renovation deal and I ghosted him after sleeping on it. Found out later he had a bunch of complaints filed against him. Its wild how a simple waiting period can filter out so much bad stuff.

Yeah that's exactly it. I started doing the same thing with any big purchase or decision and it's saved me more than once from jumping into something I'd regret.

My buddy sat on a car deal for 24 hours and found $3k in hidden fees the next morning lol.
