Appreciation post: I thought networking events were a waste of time, but one in Atlanta changed my mind.

For years, I avoided those big industry mixers, thinking they were just for handing out business cards. Then my boss made me go to a conference in Atlanta last fall. I met a project manager from a different company while waiting for coffee, and we just talked about a common software problem for 15 minutes. Six months later, that chat led to a referral for a job I just started. Has anyone else had a simple conversation at an event turn into something big?

What software were you both struggling with?

Glad it worked out for you, but those events still feel forced to me... like @brown.spencer asking about the software, the real talk happens after. I made a better contact at the hotel bar later that night, not in the main hall.

Yeah, the real stuff always happens after, like with brown.spencer.
