Back in 2012 I had to pick between taking a stable county clerk job or sticking with my mail route

I chose the mail route because I liked being outside and not stuck at a desk, even though the pay was about the same at $14 an hour. Seven years later I'm still walking my route and that clerk got laid off during budget cuts, so I guess I made the right call. Anyone else have to choose between a desk gig and something more active?

Honestly, my uncle picked a warehouse desk job over landscaping back in 2010 and got laid off twice. Tbh, you can't beat fresh air and job security when the budget cuts hit. Ngl, sounds like your gut was smarter than your brain.

And that's exactly why I still think about my cousin who turned down a union job at the post office back in 2005. He wanted to do something "more exciting" in sales and ended up bouncing between three different car dealerships before the recession hit. Meanwhile the guy who took that postal job is still there, owns a house, and has a pension coming. There's something to be said for boring stability that nobody talks about until they're in their 50s and watching their friends panic about retirement. Of course, I'm not saying every gut feeling is right - mine told me to buy a timeshare once and that was a disaster. But when your gut is yelling at you about the big stuff, it's usually worth listening.
