Had my whole approach to networking backwards for 5 years
I was hitting up random people on LinkedIn asking for coffee chats until a mentor told me I looked desperate and fake. She said to actually help someone first before asking for anything, and I got 3 job leads within 2 weeks of just sharing a useful article a recruiter posted. Has anyone else found that giving comes before getting in this game?

Started doing the same thing a few years back when I realized people hate feeling used. Instead of asking for a favor right away, I would drop a quick note on someone's post like 'this saved me hours last week' or just share a lead that wasn't relevant to me. Within a month, two hiring managers I'd never met offered to jump on a call just to say thanks.

Yeah that line about looking "desperate and fake" really hit me... I used to think being proactive meant messaging tons of strangers, but it just felt wrong and I couldn't figure out why. After reading this I tried sharing someone's post with a quick compliment attached, and they actually reached out to me first. It's wild how doing something small for no reason flips the whole dynamic around.
