I decided to skip the cover letter for a job in Austin last month and got an interview anyway.
The posting said it was optional, so I just sent my resume. The hiring manager actually called to say she appreciated how direct it was. Has anyone else had a cover letter actually hurt their chances?

Honestly, it's just a cover letter. If a hiring manager rejects you for sending one, that's a weird red flag anyway. They probably just care if you can do the job.

Tbh I read that a good cover letter can actually show how you think, not just what you've done.
