Just realized I've been stuck in the same job title for 4 years

I looked at my resume last night and noticed I've been a 'senior analyst' since 2021 at the same company in Austin. My tasks have totally changed but nobody updated my official title. I'm thinking about asking for a promotion at my next review but I'm not sure how to bring it up. Has anyone else had to push their boss to update a title that didn't match the actual work?

Honestly I read somewhere that companies are bad at updating titles unless you push for it yourself, it's like they just forget you exist until you remind them. Ngl you gotta frame it as "my responsibilities have grown a lot" not just "I want a fancier title" because that's what actually gets bosses to move on it.

my tasks have totally changed but nobody updated my official title" - man that hit close to home. I was doing full database migrations and building out reports for two years while still listed as a junior data entry person. Finally brought it up during a one-on-one by just saying "hey I've been handling X, Y, Z for a while now and my title doesn't really match anymore." My boss actually laughed and said he'd forgotten to submit the paperwork months ago. Took another three months after that conversation for HR to actually change it though.

Used to think title changes were just vanity stuff but this made me realize it actually matters for career stuff and getting proper credit.
