My college professor told me to never negotiate the first job offer and I lost $8,000

Dr. Harris from my university career center insisted that asking for more money on an entry level role would make me look greedy. I followed his advice for my first job out of school in Dallas and took the $42,000 offer without a word. Found out later from a coworker that the company had a $50,000 budget for that position the whole time. Have any of you ever gotten bad advice from someone you trusted about salary negotiations?

Has anyone else had a career counselor steer them wrong like that? @adam_patel I totally get what you're saying about the company not looking greedy while telling us to play nice... it's frustrating. What worked for me was doing a little research before the interview. I checked sites like Glassdoor and talked to a few friends in the same field to get a realistic number. When I got my offer, I just said "I was hoping for something closer to X based on my research" in a calm, polite way. They came back with a middle ground and I ended up with $5k more than the first offer. It's not about being greedy, it's about knowing what you're worth and speaking up.

Funny how that "greedy" advice saved the company eight grand but somehow didn't look greedy on their end. Guess some lessons come with a price tag attached.

Adam Patel nailed it though, the company's the one who looked greedy, not you.
