My old boss told me to 'just say yes more' at work and it backfired hard

Took his advice last quarter and ended up agreeing to lead a project I had zero time for, which caused three deadlines to slip and got me put on a performance plan - has anyone else gotten useless generic advice that actually made things worse?

Yeah, 'just say yes more' is terrible advice without boundaries. Next time, say yes but with a hard deadline and a clear 'I need these other things dropped first' so you're not set up to fail.

Wait, people actually say "just say yes more" with a straight face? Like they've never met a project manager whose entire job is to say no so things don't explode.
