Overheard a manager say 'we don't hire from community colleges' at a Denver conference
Honestly, that comment made me rethink my whole plan to save money on a degree. Has anyone else faced this kind of bias and still landed a good job?

That's a pretty common bias, honestly.

You ever think about how many managers like that end up hiring people who are just good at interviewing but can't actually do the job? Tbh, I've seen guys with fancy degrees who couldn't wire a simple circuit. What matters is if you can show up and do the work, not just where you learned it. That manager is probably just repeating some old idea he never really thought about.

My cousin in Austin got a tech job with an associate's degree and a solid portfolio. That manager's take is just one opinion in a huge field. The right skills and projects can definitely open doors that a snobby attitude tries to close.
