Paid $200 for a resume rewrite service, got back a worse version of my own
Last month I got laid off from a warehouse supervisor job in Toledo, so I figured I'd spend money on a professional resume service. The guy charged $200 and promised it would get me past the bots. What came back was my same job history with fancier action words and a bunch of buzzwords that made zero sense for my field. I sent it to two recruiters I know and both said it read like a college student's first draft. Has anyone else had better luck with those services, or is it all just templates? I've got 12 years of experience and I'm thinking of just writing my own but I'm nervous about missing something.
Those services aren't really about getting past bots, and that's the part people get wrong. Most big companies use a system that just reads keywords and job titles, so the fix is making sure your resume has the exact words from the job posting, like "forklift" or "inventory control" if that's what they list. Fancy action words don't do anything for a warehouse job because the software isn't grading your writing, it's matching terms. A $200 rewrite can't help if the guy doesn't know your field, and it sounds like he didn't. For 12 years of supervisor work you're way better off writing it yourself and just pulling the right words from each posting.
