Pro tip: People keep messing up the 'tell me about yourself' question in interviews

I've sat on hiring panels for my team for the last year. Most candidates just list their job history, which is already on the resume. The good ones connect their past work directly to the job they want now. For a marketing role I filled last month, the person we hired said, 'My last job was in sales, which taught me how to listen to what customers really need, and that's why I'm drawn to this content marketing position.' It showed she knew what the job was about. What's a better way you've heard someone answer that question?

I mean, that's still just listing job history though, just with a link. The best I heard was someone who started with a short story about why they got into the field in the first place. It felt way more real.

Totally agree with @spencer8, that story thing works. I got my last big job because I talked about fixing my grandma's leaky sink as a kid instead of just listing my years at a company. People remember the why way more than the what.

My cousin's story about her first lemonade stand got her the job.
