Serious question, is that expensive online course really worth it?

I dropped $800 on a 'career accelerator' program that promised to teach me negotiation skills. The content was just repackaged blog posts you can find for free. Has anyone actually gotten a raise from one of these things?

Ugh, that's the worst feeling... I got tricked by a "social media expert" course once. It was just a bunch of basic tips anyone could google, like "post at the right time" and "use good pictures." The real lesson was learning to spot the hype. Now I look for people who actually show their real work for free first, not just the sales pitch.

It's the same old story with a new price tag. They sell you on the dream of a big salary jump, but the real skill they're teaching is how to part with your money. I've seen friends get burned on courses for public speaking and coding. The free stuff on YouTube or library books often covers the same ground, just without the fancy sales page.

Got burned on a coding bootcamp that promised job connections. The real value came from just building actual projects and showing them to people. Stopped paying for courses and started doing the work instead. My last raise came from showing a manager a tool I built to fix a problem, not from any certificate.
