Showerthought: I quit my job in Chicago three years ago because my boss said 'you'll never make more than 60k here'

I was a junior analyst at a small firm. He said that to me in his office on a Tuesday. I spent the next month applying to remote data jobs and got an offer for 75k. Now I work for a tech company and my pay is over double that first offer. Has anyone else had a boss try to cap your growth and how did you handle it?
