Spent $800 on a career coach and it actually set me back
Everyone told me hiring a career coach was the smart move when I felt stuck, so I dropped $800 on 6 sessions with a local guy in Portland. He had me rewrite my resume like 4 times with all this corporate jargon, and I lost 2 job interviews because I sounded like a fake version of myself. My buddy told me to just talk to people in the industry I wanted to join, and that free advice got me a job in 3 weeks. Has anyone else had better luck just networking instead of paying for a coach?

In my field (IT), there are guys who run "resume workshops" that basically template everyone's resume with the same keywords recruiters look for. An $800 coach is probably doing the same thing just more expensive. A buddy of mine paid for one of those and ended up with a resume that had "synergized cross-functional deliverables" on it. He didn't even know what that meant until I looked it up. His actual experience was just running a small team at a warehouse. The coach's version made him look fake and he got called out in an interview for it. Networking, like your buddy said, is free and people can tell you're real.

Wait, @harperg76, didn't you used to be all about those resume services? I gotta admit, I was too until I heard about your buddy getting called out like that - that's brutal and definitely changed my mind on the whole thing.

Holy crap, $800 for a guy who basically made you sound like a corporate robot... that's rough. I can't believe he made you rewrite it four times too, that's just milking the clock at that point. @carter.casey, yeah I remember Harper talking about that dude getting called out in an interview... that's the kind of thing that keeps you up at night. It's crazy how these coaches sell you this package of "you gotta sound like this" but it just makes you look like you're reading off a script. Networking is the way to go, because people want to talk to a real person, not a walking LinkedIn profile. You got lucky your buddy steered you the right direction before you wasted even more time.
