Talked to a guy who left a senior dev role at Google for a state government job

Met him at a coffee shop in Austin last week and he said he got tired of being a "feature factory" - now he builds public records systems that maybe 500 people use. It hit different hearing someone actually happy about less impact and more sleep. Has anyone else here stepped down from a high-profile role and found it was worth the pay cut?

His "less impact and more sleep" line made me realize I've been optimizing for all the wrong things.

Honestly @adamr14, that line hit me too hard because I've been running on coffee and pure stubbornness thinking I was being productive. Tbh my "optimization" strategy is basically just me ignoring how tired I am until my body forces a nap on the couch. Ngl I think we all need to admit our hustle is just a fancy word for poor life choices.
