The debate on whether networking events are actually worth the time or just awkward small talk

I used to think networking events were a total waste. You pay $30 for a badge, stand around with a plate of sad cheese cubes, and swap business cards with people who forget your name in 5 minutes. But after I landed a solid lead at one in Austin last year, I started wondering if I was just doing them wrong. On the other hand, I've been to at least 10 events where nothing came of them. So is it about the event quality or how you work the room? What's your experience been like - do they actually help your career or are they mostly a bust?

Sad cheese cubes" is the most accurate description of 90% of these things. The trick I learned is to never go to a general networking event. Pick ones that are tied to a specific industry or topic you actually care about. The general ones are just people fishing for anyone with a pulse. The specific ones, people actually want to talk shop and you have a real reason to start a conversation. Also, don't try to talk to everyone. Pick 3 or 4 people and actually have a real talk. Follow up the next day with something specific you talked about. I've gotten more out of one good conversation than a whole night of handing out cards.

Honestly you nailed it with the sad cheese cubes thing. I been to three of those free for all mixers and walked away with nothing but a stomach ache from bad crackers. The industry specific ones are night and day different though. Just last month I went to a small manufacturing meetup and had a real 20 minute talk with a guy about supply chain headaches. Followed up the next morning and we're grabbing coffee next week. That one conversation was worth more than every business card I ever collected.

Same pattern as trying every dating app versus joining a club you actually like.
