The one career talk that actually meant something to me
I was working at a warehouse in Phoenix about 5 years ago, just grinding through night shifts, never thinking about the future. One day the old supervisor named Hank pulled me aside after my 10th straight double shift. He said, "Kid, you're working hard but you're working stupid. You're making me money but you're not making yourself anything." That hit different because nobody ever called me out like that before. He told me to pick one skill I already used at work and get certified in it within 6 months. I chose forklift operations, got certified, and that opened the door to a logistics coordinator job paying $8 more an hour. Has anyone here had a boss actually care enough to give advice that wasn't just about the company?

Right, because nothing says "I care" like watching you run in circles before finally telling you the obvious, lol. Glad Maria gave you the cheat codes though.

oh man, Hank sounds like a real one... I had a boss like that at my old restaurant job, she was the head cook named Maria. She saw me stressing over the line during a rush and told me "you're moving fast but you're not moving smart, you're gonna burn out before you're 30." She taught me how to prep my station differently, like grouping stuff together so I wasn't running back and forth all night. It was such a small thing but it saved me so much time and energy, and I actually started enjoying the work instead of just surviving it. She didn't have to do that, you know, most managers just want you to keep your head down and not complain.

Honestly, I used to think it was on you to figure stuff out on your own, like you had to earn the right to ask for help or something. But hearing stories like this makes me realize how much a little guidance can change everything, especially when you're just starting out. It's not about someone holding your hand, it's about them seeing you struggle and actually giving a damn enough to point you in the right direction.
