A customer's complaint about my stair treads changed my sanding process
Last month in Portland, a homeowner pointed out that my stair treads had swirl marks you could see in the sunlight. They said, 'Looks like you used a orbital sander and called it done.' I always thought 120 grit was good enough, but they were right. I switched to hand sanding with the grain using 150 and 220, then buffing with a cloth. Has anyone else had a client catch something you never noticed?

Funny how a customer can see stuff you've walked past a hundred times, right? I used to swear by the orbital at 120 too, but now I'm hand finishing everything and it feels like a whole different level of care.

Tell me about it. Walked past the same scratch in a dining table for three days straight, then the customer points it out in ten seconds. Guess my eyes were saving that trick for when I was already tired of sanding.
