Appreciation post: the 78 year old finisher at the Rockford job taught me more in 10 minutes than my 2 year apprenticeship did
He watched me fight a maple stair nose with a block plane for 20 minutes, then said "you're sanding your way out of a cut you should've made at the saw" and showed me a 3 stroke sharpening trick on his oilstone that fixed my tear out on the spot, so what little sharpening habits did an old timer hand down to you?
Funny how a guy who's been retired since before I was born can fix in 10 minutes what two years of "training" couldn't, huh. My old timer trick was simpler but it stuck with me: he'd lick his thumb, rub it across the back of the blade, and if it felt grabby it was sharp enough, if it slid it needed more stone time. No jigs, no fancy angle gauge, just a calloused thumb and about 4 seconds. Blew my mind that something so low tech beat the $80 honing guide I'd bought. Still do it that way to this day.
