Hot take: that compliment from the homeowner still sticks with me

Last spring I was finishing up some custom shelves in a kitchen remodel over in Arlington. The homeowner, Mrs. Davis, came in while I was packing up and just said "you made my house feel like a home." It was like 4:30 on a Friday and I was dead tired, but that one line hit different. Has anyone else had a client say something that just stayed with you way longer than the paycheck?

Last Mrs. Davis I worked for told me my work was "adequate" and then asked if I could sweep up better next time. So yeah, that compliment would probably stick with me too.

Whoa, I gotta push back on that a little. Compliments are nice and all, but at the end of the day that paycheck is what keeps the lights on and covers my mortgage. In my experience, getting too hung up on sentimental feedback can mess with your head when the next client is totally indifferent or even critical. I'd rather take the money and a solid review than a warm fuzzy feeling that doesn't pay the bills.
