My old boss told me to stop sanding past 120 grit on pine trim and I finally get it
I argued with him for 20 minutes in his shop in Boise because I thought glass smooth meant better work. Then he handed me a scrap board, we finished it at 120 and 220 side by side, and the 120 one took stain way more even with less blotching. Now I want to know, does anyone actually go past 150 on softwoods or is that just a habit we all picked up somewhere?

Isn't that just life, where more effort often makes things worse instead of better?
