My uncle swore by a 2x4 leveling trick, backfired hard

My uncle Bob from Toledo told me to skip the laser and just use a 2x4 with a bubble level to set up long cabinet runs. Tried it on a 14 foot wall last month, ended up with a 3/8 inch slope across the top and had to shim every damn cabinet after the fact. Lasers cost less than the time I burned fixing that mess. Anyone else get screwed by an old school shortcut from a relative?

My neighbor Gary tried the same thing on his garage workbench last spring. He used one of those old aluminum levels his dad gave him, the one with the cracked vial that still looked straight. Spent a whole Saturday building the frame, then stood back and could see the slope from across the room, plain as day. He had to take the whole thing apart and redo it, and his wife still brings it up whenever the topic of tools comes up. Some tricks from the old days just don't hold up when you're working with modern materials and longer runs.
