Old timer told me to rough cut my joinery loose and I fought him for a year
Guy named Frank at the local lumber yard kept saying leave a 32nd gap in my mortise and tenon joints. I thought he was full of it, always cut mine tight as hell. Then I built a dining table for a client in Nashville last spring and three joints cracked right after the humidity dropped. Now I cut everything loose by a hair and let the glue do the work. Anyone else fight against proper clearances and pay for it?

Three cracked joints sounds like more than just a little gap though.

Three cracked joints sounds like more than just a little gap" - yeah that stuck out to me too, @faith_thomas. It's like when people say "just a tiny leak" about a water stain on the ceiling and then you find out the whole roof is rotting. Seems like we all have a habit of downplaying stuff until it's way worse than we thought.
