Pro tip: I just hit 500 board feet of walnut I've milled myself from local trees.

I mean, I started doing it just to save cash on a small project in my own shop, but after three years of grabbing logs from a guy in Springfield, that number kind of hit me. It's not just the wood, it's knowing the grain and the story of every piece before it even hits the bench. Anyone else keep track of their own milling totals, or am I just being weird about it?

Totally get that. I keep a tally on the wall of my shed for the maple and cherry I've slabbed up. It's at like 320 board feet now, and I can picture the exact yard each piece came from. Makes the coffee table I'm building feel less like a project and more like a record.

That "record" feeling is the whole point.

Ever notice how the stuff you make yourself just feels different? That's a solid pile of wood with a story behind it.
