A customer's comment about tack strips made me switch my whole approach
I was finishing a job in a split-level house last week and the homeowner, an older guy who used to do some flooring himself, watched me work. He said, 'You know, I always used to think putting the tack strip a full inch from the wall was overkill, but I had to redo my whole living room after six months when the carpet started to buckle.' I'd been taught to keep it at about half an inch, but his story about the long-term wear got me thinking. I looked it up and a lot of the guides for thicker carpets do say an inch gives better stretch and holds the tension. I tried it on my next two jobs with that plush stuff and the fit is way tighter. Anyone else adjust their tack strip distance based on carpet type, or am I just late to the party on this?
