Back in the day we carried seams on our shoulder.
I see these young guys dragging a full roll of carpet across the floor. Thats how you get kinks and delamination. You gotta roll it out straight from the truck. Not fight it across the room. Am I the only one who still teaches this to new helpers?

Three weeks ago my buddy Mike who installs hardwood floors in Charlotte called me up complaining about a job gone sideways. He had this new kid helping him and the kid wanted to drag a bundle of 5 inch oak planks across the showroom floor instead of carrying them in from the truck two at a time. Mike said the kid argued it was faster and they got into it right there in front of the customer. Well the kid dragged that bundle and sure enough scratched up a good twenty feet of floorboards on the bottom. Mike had to stop everything and spend an extra hour sanding and refinishing those boards to match. Cost him time and materials. The kid learned real quick that day why the old way exists.

Man, you hit on something there. I see the same thing everywhere, not just in carpet work. People want shortcuts but they end up creating more problems down the line. It's like folks rush through the setup phase of anything, whether it's cooking or fixing a car, and then wonder why it falls apart later. Taking that extra minute to do it right from the start saves you an hour of fixing mistakes, in my experience.

Yeah, it's like the whole "measure twice cut once" thing applies to way more than just woodworking. People skip the prep and then act surprised when everything goes sideways.
