Can we talk about how we used to cut around vents compared to now?

I used to just freehand it with a knife for years, but after a job in Tampa where the customer complained about a gap, I bought a $45 vent template kit. Has anyone else switched to a template system or found a better way?

My buddy tried one of those kits and it was a disaster, he ended up with a weird oval shape instead of a rectangle. He just went back to using the vent as a guide, said it was faster.

Honestly, I just trace the vent itself with a pencil now. The template kits are fine, but I always seem to be missing the exact size I need.

That Tampa job would have been a nightmare without my template kit. The key is marking the center points first, not just tracing the outline.
