I finally gave up on stretching with a knee kicker alone
Kept getting ripples on a long hallway job in an old house. Three hours of trying to fix it before I admitted I needed a power stretcher.

Knee kicker is for small rooms or patches, that's it. Long hallways need a power stretcher every time. Old houses are the worst for this too, uneven subfloors and weird angles. You can fight it for hours but the ripples always win. Good call renting one or buying the smaller manual version if you don't wanna drop cash on the big one. That hallway won't be a problem anymore.

What about the doorways though. Nobody talks about that. You stretch a long hallway perfect then hit a doorway and all that tension just disappears into the next room. Had a 30 foot run once with three doorways along it. Power stretcher was useless trying to keep it tight past each one. Had to cut and tuck each doorway separately with a knee kicker anyway. So really you're doing both tools no matter what.

Buddy of mine tried the same thing. Gave up and cut at every doorway.
