Rant: I was about to re-cut a whole roll for a weird angle until I tried something with a scrap piece.

Got stuck on a bay window in a 1970s split-level where the wall wasn't square by a full inch over 8 feet. The boss would have said to just cut the carpet to fit the wonky line, but I knew that would look bad. I took a scrap, laid it over the gap, and used a spray adhesive to tack it down before making my final mark... it worked perfectly and saved me over an hour. Anyone else have a go-to trick for when the room just won't cooperate?

Ever try to scribe a piece of baseboard with a compass? I used to think that was a waste of time, just cut it close and caulk the rest. Had a wall with a big belly in it last month, tried the compass method to copy the curve onto the board. The fit was so tight I barely needed any caulk at all, totally changed how I handle out of plumb walls now.

But isn't caulk just faster? A little bead hides most sins and you're moving on to the next job. That scribing trick sounds like a lot of extra steps for a wall nobody will ever look at twice.

So how much time did you actually save on the back end with caulk versus scribing?
