That time a homeowner's comment made me rethink my seam rolling technique
I had a customer last spring in a big living room where I put down a nice plush carpet. She walked across it and pointed out a faint line where two pieces met. I told her that's just how seams look sometimes. She said 'I paid a lot for this and I don't want to see any lines.' So I went back and really focused on my seam roller pressure and made sure I used a knee kicker to stretch the sides tighter before rolling. Now I spend an extra 10 minutes on every seam to get it completely invisible. Has anyone else had a homeowner point out something small that totally changed your process?

...and there I was thinking my seams were invisible until someone's aunt walked in and said "oh honey, looks like you sewed the carpet together with a jump rope." Man, that stuck with me. I used to think if you couldn't see it from the doorway then it was fine, but now I'm like you - I'll spend an extra 10 minutes rolling and re-rolling, and I even bought one of those heavy weighted seam rollers that makes me feel like I'm ironing pants. It's funny how one comment can haunt you into being a better installer, isn't it?

You ever try using a seam iron on low heat instead of a roller? I had the same problem for years, seams would look okay but then the tape would show through like a ghost. Started using a cheap iron I got at a thrift store and it changed everything. Just a few passes with light pressure and the seam blends in without squishing the backing flat. Took me getting roasted by a customer's grandma to figure it out too lol. Now I don't even bother with the heavy roller unless the carpet is super thick.

The thing is @the_christopher, that aunt might have done you a favor. But I'd rather have a seam you can spot from the doorway than one that falls apart in six months because I overworked it with a roller. Some people get too caught up in looks and forget carpet is supposed to hold up when you walk on it.
