The 8-foot seam that turned into a 3-hour ordeal

At a condo reno downtown two weeks back, I pulled up 20-year old loop carpet that looked fine on top, but the pad underneath had turned to dust. New plank went in smooth, but that seam across the hallway kept ghosting, no matter how many times I re-tacked it. Old seams used to be forgiving, you could stretch a bit and walk away. Now with these tight weaves, one bad heating pass and the whole line shows. Anyone else find themselves fighting seams on older subfloors where the tackstrip was nailed into pure particleboard?

Feel for you on this one. That ghosting seam is the worst kind of headache because it looks perfect for a day, then decides to show up like an old friend you didn't invite. I've had similar luck on particleboard, where the teeth just don't hold like they do on ply, and every re-stretch makes it worse. Hang in there, some jobs just fight you every step of the way.
