The day I realized I was stretching carpet wrong the whole time

I've been installing carpet for about 8 years now. Last month I was on a job in a split level house in Akron and the homeowner kept watching me work. He wasn't being annoying, just curious. I was doing a long hallway and he asked why I was stretching from the middle instead of starting at the far wall. I told him that's just how I always did it. He said he used to be a floor inspector for 20 years and that I was probably getting wavy spots later. I brushed it off but that night I couldn't stop thinking about it. Next morning I looked up some old trade videos and sure enough I had been doing it backwards since day one. Has anyone else had that moment where you find out a basic step you've been doing wrong for years? What was it and how did you figure it out?

At least you found out before you retired, silver lining and all that.

Ngl I kind of see it the opposite way. Finding out that everything you worked toward for decades might not have been what you thought has to sting a lot. There's no real "silver lining" when your whole career path turns out to be a dead end right at the finish line. It's more like you wasted your best years chasing something that let you down at the worst possible time. Honestly, that sounds rough and I feel for anyone in that spot.
