The golf ball trick for stretching carpet into a closet corner, and I'm a little mad it took me 12 years to hear about it
I was finishing a three bedroom rental down in Amarillo a couple weeks ago, and the last closet was one of those tight corners with the door frame right up against the wall. I fought that corner for maybe 20 minutes with my stair tool and a knee kicker, and the carpet kept popping back off the tackless every time I let go. The homeowner's brother happened to be there helping move furniture, and he installs commercial carpet in Lubbock. He watched me struggle for a minute, then walked out to his truck and came back with a golf ball. He told me to work the ball into the corner with my knee, rolling it along the seam line while I stretch, and it pushes the backing down over the tack strip without tearing up my fingers or the nap. I tried it and that corner stuck on the first try, no popping at all. I've since used it on four more closets and a stair landing, and it works better than anything I was doing before. Has anyone else heard of this, or do you all have a different go-to for tight corners?
